MXA Framework

The MXA Framework covers three closely related frameworks:

  1. Enterprise Architecture
  2. ICT Strategic Planning
  3. Solution Architecture

Each of these is described below.  It’s important to note that the MXA Framework defines how all the elements fit together.  This is essential to making it work. Here is a simplified picture of the MXA Framework (click on the image to enlarge).

The MXA EA Framework is designed to:

  1. Drive the elicitation of an ICT Strategic Plan.
  2. Ensure that projects deliver outcomes that support the enterprise intent.

The  Framework includes:

  • Business Capability Modelling (our own practical meta-model)
  • Technical Reference Model (our own real-world, modern taxonomy)
  • Application Portfolio Schema
  • Enterprise Data Modelling approach
  • Application Integration View
  • Enterprise Security Framework
  • Enterprise Network View

The MXA ICT Strategic Planning Framework includes:

  • Defined factors that drive the identification of required change
  • Gaps, Duplication and Dependencies identified by overlays of various EA models (for example overlay of the Business Capability Model with the Application Portfolio may identify application duplication)
  • Templates for:
    • Portfolio Definition
    • Outcome Measurement Plan
    • Outline Business Case

The MXA Solution Architecture Framework includes:

  • Templates for:
    • Solution Blueprint
    • Options Paper
    • Outline Business Case
  • Solution Architecture Process, Template and Assessment Criteria
  • Detailed Design Process, Template and Assessment Criteria

The MXA Framework provides our consultant with the following tools:

  1. Architecture Methodology
  2. Architecture Values – how we approach doing architecture, what is important
  3. Templates (we also happily use templates provided by our clients)
  4. Procedures – for example, how we review and assure our own work, or generic check-lists and procedures that can be applied anywhere.
  5. Meta Models
  6. Visualisation guides – samples of posters and diagrams that provide effective techniques to communicate key concepts
  7. Example artefacts – a vast repository of work produced for the government over the many collective decades of experience of the MXA Consultants.

As a young and growing company, we are continuing to document our framework.  MXA Consultants have access to a shared EverNote account that contains the MXA Framework documents, for easy reference from anywhere.
